This week I continued the Too Good for Violence curriculum with the 3rd grade & the Too Good for Drugs curriculum with the Kindergarten classes. The third grade learned about I-messages and why knowing how to use I-message is an effective communication tool. They also learned how to identify you-messages, and we explored why the use of you-messages is not an effective way of communicating.

The first week back from Christmas break was a busy one! We enrolled several new students and lost a few, too. Our broadcast messages this week focused on new beginnings, goal setting, positive thinking, & tolerance. In all the hubbub of the week, I did manage to pretest the 3rd grade for the Too Good for Violence program.

This week I visited the 2nd grade and 5th grade classrooms. The fifth graders learned some bully busting techniques and had some fun with the skit that brought to light the serious problem of bullying & some techniques for preventing it.
The second graders learned about expressing their feelings through the use of "I-messages." We reinforced the idea that everyone has feelings & deserves to have their feelings respected....even if we don't agree with them.

This week I visited the 5th grade classrooms to begin our Too Good For Violence curriculum. The students participated in a fun bridge building activity. They were give cheese cubes, grapes, & toothpicks and allowed five minutes to plan the bridge with their group. Once the planning time was over, the students had to work together with these supplies to build a bridge. They were not allowed to talk during the building phase!
