This has been a busy and crazy week in Third grade.  Between it being a short week, taking Spring pictures and a trip to Fort Smith it has been a little wild.  We have been working on measurement in math and started a unit on Oklahoma in Social Studies.  We went to Fort Smith yesterday to see a production of "Wizard of Oz."  The students loved it and then had lots of good pizza at Cici's.  The trip was finished off with a visit to Ben Geren park.  Remember that next week is Spring break.  Enjoy…See More

Week of March 4, 2013

This week in third grade we took our Acuity Benchmark test.  This is a test designed to see what our students have learned so far this year and what they still need to learn.  We also started a unit on measurement.  This will last next week also.  We are working on time, volume, length, and mass.  We have also started doing daily reviews to get ready for our OCCT tests.  We are ending the week with a class ice cream sundae party for mastering multiplication facts.  Students have been working…See More

This has been a good first week back after our long break.  It was good to see all the smiling faces back.  We have continued to work on division this week by finishing up chapter 6 in our math books.  We have seen how it relates to subtraction and is the inverse operation of multiplication.  I have been really pleased with the student's progress on this topic.  We were also lucky enough to get to work with iPads in our classroom on Wednesday.  Mrs. Parks came in and set up stations for the…See More

Wow!  We are up to our eyeballs in multiplication.  We are moving fast and furious in the area of multiplication.  Students have been busy learning the commutative property, associative property, identity property, distributive property and zero property of multiplication as well as learning facts from 0 to 10.  They have been learning many different techniques for learning their multiplication facts and working the problems out.  Students need to be busy studying their multiplication facts…See More

Week of October 22, 2012 Donna Morris

We have been working hard this week on beginning multiplication skills.  Students have learned the different properties of multiplication, all about arrays, using bar models and to just plain multiply.  This is the start of lots more multiplication to come.  We also started some new problem solving strategies to help the students look at different ways to solve problems that they are presented with.  The students enjoyed using our new manipulatives to learn about multiplication.  Anytime our…See More

With this being the week of fall break, we are did few things different in class.  We watched a video on how symmetry is used in mathematics, then the students were shown examples of city skylines.  After viewing the skylines, students were given pattern blocks, blue construction paper, and black construction paper.  They traced the shapes on the blue paper and then constructed a city skyline on half of the black paper and then had to make a symmetrical skyline on the other half.  We had some…See More

This week brought the introduction of multiplication to our third grade class.  We looked at multiplication using arrays, repeated addition and by groups.  Students also started learning the properties of multiplication and had very good results on their vocabulary test on Friday.  We worked on Think Through Math, Go Math and That Quiz on our computers.  IXL, Think Through Math and Go Math can all be worked on during the weekend or in the evenings.  All of these are excellent sources for your…See More

Week of October 1, 2012 Donna Morris

This week we continued our work on graphs.  We worked on line plots, picture graphs, bar graphs, and frequency tables.  Students used IXL and that quiz to practice their graphing skills.  Friday's test was given on the computer for the second time this year.  Most students did very well.  I am giving the students who struggles with it some, the opportunity to redo the test on Monday using pencil and paper.  I feel that it is very important that students treat a test on the computer just like…See More

This week seemed to be a lot easier for the students.  Our week was spent working on different types of graphs.  Students learned the names of various types of graphs, how to read the graphs, and answer questions about the graphs.  We also did a class survey over the students favorite types of foods.  Next week will be a continuation of graphs.  Congratulations to our third grade classes.  In our division, we raised the most money for the library and were rewarded with a pop and popcorn treat…See More

Week of Sept. 10, 2012 Donna Morris

We are still busy working on our first chapter in our math books.  The topics we have mainly been covering this week are different ways to subtract large numbers.  We used mental math strategies, place value, estimating differences, and then the standard way of regrouping (borrowing).  Students seemed to have a pretty good grasp of the topic.  We will finish up the first chapter next week and then move onto Chapter 2 which deals with various types of graphs.  That chapter is a lot shorter and…See More

Welcome to third grade math class!!!!!!  Well, here are another year has started and we are off and running.  The first couple of days of school consisted of me and my students getting to know each other a little better.  Lots of new faces and names to remember.  Looks like it is going to be a good year.  This year we are looking at incorporating our Common Core standards into our math classes.  This is going to bring about a lot of changes in the way we look at math.  You will see concepts…See More

Third grade is busy working on the concept of measurement.  We are working on measuring using rulers, measuring using the following  inch, 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch  and 3/4 inch and temperature.  We have reviewed multiplication concepts with 8's and money, money, and more money.  Many of the students are still struggling with money word problems, so we are we will continue to work on them every week until I see that the students are proficient at this skill.  We have started using the website…See More

Students are progressing nicely on their cursive handwriting.  Several have even made the comment that they catch themselves writing in cursive when they aren't required to.  This week both classes wrote a descriptive paragraph on the topic of their choice.  After pre-writing web and writing the actual paragraph, the students exchanged papers with a partner and proofread their papers.  I was pleased with the outcome from this writing topic.  In math, we worked on multiplication of 5's.  All I…See More
