Where Learning Is An Adventure
This week we focused on learning our procedures for the hallway, the cafeteria, the classroom, and the playground. We also reviewed many first grade skills so that we would be ready to start 2nd grade skills next week.
In reading this week, we read "Winners Never Quit" by Mia Hamm. We also practiced the focus skill "making predictions."
In math this week, we focused on addition and subtraction fluency. Some of the more difficult skills included making a ten to add and subtract. Students had to decompose numbers in order to make a number sentence that start with 10.
In grammar, we worked with nouns.

This week in reading we read Neighborhood News, a reader's theater. Everyone got to read a different part every day. It really increased their fluency.
In math, we are working on building fluency with basic addition and subtraction facts. Thursday, we focused specifically on "doubles plus one."

This week we read "Get Up and Go!" and studied the long A sound (CVCe). We learned about author's purpose and read many different examples of both fiction and nonfiction.
In math, we studied place value, played a place value race game, and practiced writing numbers in expanded form. The expanded form activities culminated with an expanded form card game that the kids loved. They already want to play again!

This week we read "Gus & Grandpa and the Two-Wheeled Bike." We learned the characteristics of realistic fiction and compared stories with that genre. Our phonics skill was long a (spelled ai and ay) and we mastered the generalizations for those patterns.
In math, we worked on addition and subtraction fluency by using doubles facts to add.
