Week of Aug. 18-22, 2014

This week we focused on learning our procedures for the hallway, the cafeteria, the classroom, and the playground.  We also reviewed many first grade skills so that we would be ready to start 2nd grade skills next week.

In the midst of all the learning, we had time to play some KESAM (math) games.  The students seemed to really enjoy them.  Please check out our pics.

October 6th through October 10th

In reading this week, we read "Winners Never Quit" by Mia Hamm.  We also practiced the focus skill "making predictions."

In math this week, we focused on addition and subtraction fluency.  Some of the more difficult skills included making a ten to add and subtract.  Students had to decompose numbers in order to make a number sentence that start with 10.

In grammar, we worked with nouns.

Week of September 29th through October 3rd

In grammar, we learned to write topic sentences.  Each day we wrote a "hamburger paragraph" about a…

Week of Aug. 25-29, 2014

This week we read "Get Up and Go!" and studied the long A sound (CVCe).  We learned about author's purpose and read many different examples of both fiction and nonfiction.

In math, we studied place value, played a place value race game, and practiced writing numbers in expanded form.  The expanded form activities culminated with an expanded form card game that the kids loved.  They already want to play again!

Oct. 8-12

This week we read "Gus & Grandpa and the Two-Wheeled Bike." We learned the characteristics of realistic fiction and compared stories with that genre.  Our phonics skill was long a (spelled ai and ay) and we mastered the generalizations for those patterns.

In math, we worked on addition and subtraction fluency by using doubles facts to add.
