Taking a "Paws" to Praise Our Most Innovative and Creative Projects
Week ofAugust 22-26, 2011
Monday- In reading we listened to "Only a Toad," practiced writing spelling words with the -id and -ide patterns, practiced decoding longer words and counting syllables, and learned what makes a complete sentence. In math, we discovered the significance of numbers and recorded several examples of the ways that numbers impact our lives (age, address, telling time, counting money, etc.) All lessons were done on the Smart Board. Tonight's homework: study the -id and -ide spelling pattern.
Tuesday- In reading I read "I Am Tired of Being Little," we practiced decoding longer words using the -id and -ide patterns, read a poem together called "Slips and Slides," learned 5 new vocabulary words, and picked apart short stories to identify their main ideas and details. In math, we practiced skip counting and made a video which I will post the link to on my blog when I get it edited. All lessons were done on the smart board with the exception of the skip counting game. Tonight's homework: skip-counting worksheet

Wednesday- In reading we reviewed the phonics skill for closed syllables (CVC-short vowel) and the rule for "sneaky e." If you are not familiar with "sneaky e" please ask your student to explain it. They are doing well with the skill and they like the sneakiness of silent e at the end of words with long vowels. In math, we became human numbers (by wearing sandwich boards with digits on them) and demonstrated how addition and subtraction are different. We also used the vocabulary terms "sum" and "difference." I took pictures of the students writing in their math journals today. Homework: Addition and Subtraction worksheet
Thursday- In reading, we learned our computer center procedures, practiced our spelling center for the second day, completed a fluency test, and started a beginning-year bench mark assessment. In math, we learned the new vocabulary terms "in all" for addition and "are left" for subtraction, and created our own word problems. Homework: Chapter 1 Review Sheet (TEST TOMORROW!)
Friday- In reading, we practiced all of our centers with correct procedures. We also reviewed words with -id and -ide, and read "I'm Tired of Being Little." In math, we reviewed and then we took our first test. Homework: Addition and Subtraction worksheet.
